The Coin Cabinet at Eggenberg Palace tells the memorable history of coins from Styria and uses fascinating examples to show that coins are far more than just a means of payment.

STEIERMARK SCHAU 2025
The Eggenbergs and money
The special exhibition presents the rise, glory and decline of the Eggenberg dynasty based on the coins they minted. In addition, examples of the diversity of coinage in the Holy Roman Empire in the 17th century are presented.
However, the monetary history background is also illuminated when the coinage system collapsed at the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War and Emperor Ferdinand II had to deal with a financial crisis that amounted to national bankruptcy. The special exhibition Die Eggenberger und das Geld is being shown as part of STEIERMARK SCHAU 2025.
