Pfeilburg Museum

The town museum in the Pfeilburg is located in one of the oldest and most historic buildings in the spa capital of Fürstenfeld, right in the town center: the core of the building, the so-called “Schwartzturm” from the 13th century, is one of the few surviving medieval residential towers in Styria. The castle belonging to the tower from the 16th and 17th centuries was the residence of the owners of the tower. It was named after Hans Pfeilberg, one of the first owners, who acquired the property in 1490 and began rebuilding it after the Hungarian invasion of 1480. In 1691, Christoph Liscutin bought the building and built Austria’s first tobacco factory here, making an important decision for the town that lasted well into the 20th century. After the Pfeilburg was acquired by the town, it housed a school, barracks, a military hospital and finally a poorhouse.

The museum association saved the complex from demolition in 1975 and a comprehensive renovation took place from 1995 to 1999. Awarded the Austrian Museum Prize for its rich holdings, successful presentation and disabled access, the Pfeilburg Museum presents urban and contemporary history on three floors and around 700 square meters of exhibition space. Since its successful renovation, Pfeilburg Castle has become one of the most attractive sights in the city center. Located not far from the main square and right next to the old fortification wall, the historical ambience of Pfeilburg Castle offers ideal conditions for exquisite concerts, atmospheric summer festivals, children’s festivals, open-air film and presentation evenings.
