The Augustinian Chorherrenstift in Vorau

The Augustinian canons are a community of priests whose primary task is pastoral care. Vorau Abbey is the only canons' monastery still in existence in Styria – its foundation dates back to the 12th century.
The center of the abbey complex is the opulent Baroque church. This was rebuilt in the 17th century while retaining the medieval towers. Highlights include the countless frescoes, the gilded sculptures and the particularly magnificent altar. Pure splendor! The world-famous library is home to many thousands of book treasures. The 15th century "Vorau Folk Bible", a UNESCO cultural heritage site, is particularly precious. The sacristy with its impressive frescoes of heaven and hell by the painter Johann Cyriak Hackhofer is considered an artistic jewel of the Augustinian canons' monastery in Vorau. Thanks to the Stiftstaverne in the inner courtyard, your cultural excursion in Styria will also be well catered for.
