Dive into the varied history of Fürstenfeld. City and contemporary history on about 700m2 exhibition space inspire young and old.

In one of the oldest and most historic buildings of the thermal capital Fürstenfeld is located directly in the center of the city museum in the Pfeilburg: the building core, the so-called “Schwartzturm” from the 13th century, is one of the few preserved medieval residential towers in Styria. The castle belonging to the tower, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, was the residence of the owners who had leased the tower. It was named after Hans Pfeilberg, one of the first owners, who purchased the property in 1490 and began rebuilding it after the Hungarian invasion of 1480. In 1691, Christoph Liscutin bought the building and established the first tobacco factory in Austria here, making an important decision for the town that would last into the 20th century. After the acquisition of the Pfeilburg by the city, a school, barracks, a military hospital and ultimately a poorhouse were housed here.

The museum association saved the site from demolition in 1975 and from 1995 to 1999 a comprehensive renovation took place. Distinguished with the Austrian Museum Award for the rich holdings, the successful presentation and for the handicapped accessible equipment takes place in the museum Pfeilburg on three floors and about 700 square meters of exhibition space city and contemporary history. Since the successful renovation, the Pfeilburg is one of the most attractive sights in the center of the city. Not far from the main square and located directly on the old fortification wall, the historical ambience of the Pfeilburg offers ideal conditions for exquisite concerts, atmospheric summer festivals, children’s festivals, open-air film and presentation evenings.
